I Rode My Bike Today...

9:30am start up Skyline in Corona for another 6000'+ adventure. Rewind, yesterday I went hiking. Where? Skinsuit to look for secrets trails for future extravaganzas.

Problem was, today my legs are sore AF. Not a good day for a big ride. The WFO9 being 10 lbs heavier than the SOWWTiHT29'r was quite noticeable as well as the DH tire friction. Did I mention it was hot too? I'm doomed. Crawled up to Beeks. Saw a friend I haven't seen for a while. Dorris aka Crazygrandma from STR fame. She's still riding.

Next up, er, down, B* ST's. Rolled through the first one no prob. Crashed on Booby-trap. :notworthy: Thought I'd ride in the rut filled with kitty litter. Rolled the rest of the way down the ST's without incident. Local legend on Hidden Trail Bottom.. Another crawl up B* FR. Two imtbtrails jerseys coming down. Fess up, who was out there today? Also coming down was @BeckTrex and 'gazor but I didn't recognize them until they passed.

Crawled past the doppler to Skinsuit. F'n hot.:gag: Took a break before bombing down. After hiking Skinsuit yesterday I knew to let er rip. Hard pack ST all the way down. Get some! Well except for the last couple steep AF descents were sketchy. Aren't they always?

I never ride the make shift bridge getting back to Skyline. Always walk it. This time I misplaced my footing right into the hole. Leg went in up to my knee, stopping from going ant further. That hurt, really hurt. So much so I thought I was done. Limped back to the other side. Sat in pain for a few minutes.

Started to feel better so I replenished my water supply at the Skyline entrance and began to clime Skyline again. Clouds had moved in making it cooler but I was beat. Probably my slowest climb ever up this FR. Do I get a PR for that? Stopping at every piece of shade I could find. Thought about turning around several times and calling it a day. Set a goal to at least climb to a certain thrilling DH trail that would be a fun finale. Past it, kept going. Finally made it to the top of Troy Lee. Exhausted.

What can I say, Troy Lee so fun! Also in great shape. A great run down until I missed a turn. With no climbing energy I had to push the bike back up a short distance. The bike ran well all day. Back at my truck I had no idea if I had a 6000+ day. Figured maybe 5500 since I did not descend B* to the lot and didn't climb to Beeks a second time. Fortunately ended up with a 29/6200. Mission accomplished, barely.

You're the second guy I know who has crashed on Booby Trap! The other guy took the handlebars to the thigh and ended up with a couple inch long scar... :p

Glad you're ok... Nice ride, by the way.

Soon, for sure. I feel like I still need to make good on my 50 promise to myself. I was actually thinking about it this morning, wondering when you're planning on doing it. Probably one more weekend for me to ramp up and then I'd be good. Not that you should plan it around me, but if those criteria line up that would be rad.
I didn't really have a date in mind yet but the 14th or 15th of November or Thanksgiving weekend would be good. I have a couple of routes in mind that would link the more popular singletrack together. If there's interest I can post up a ride invite.

Definitely interested, and up for any of those dates. Something about Thanksgiving weekend sounds nice, assuming most people won't be traveling this year. Good way to break up the weekend. But, yeah, in for whatever you decide.

Sunday morning cruise with @Ocpop, we met up on the bike path near Saddleback church and headed for the STT. Not very many people around, I guess the fire and Whiting being shut has kept a lot of people away. Someone did the hero flyby on the bike path but we caught him up on the climb and ended up chatting for a bit. From STT looking back at Whiting you can see the damage thats been done. Definitely hit the northern end of the park, I'm picking Borrego, Mustard and the trails of them will all be out of action for some time.
back of whiting.jpg

Got passed by a couple of e-bikers on STT, one apologized for being on a cheater bike  Got to the flag and realized the ammo can had disappeared. Found it blown down the side of the hill so clambered down to retrieve it and re-tether it to the flag pole. Picked up as many of the letters as I could but some were just to far down for me to try and get to. @herzalot's flag is definitely looking worse for wear after the recent winds.
Luge flag.jpg

We headed down the Luge and I managed a new PB which was pretty unexpected, I was taking it relatively easy because its getting blown out in a lot of places. Definitely getting more comfortable on the new rig even took to the air a couple of times (I usually try to keep wheels firmly on the ground)
We turned left at the road and then headed for Monastery Road to climb up to Vista in O'Neill. Run down Vista was uneventful and we had time up our sleeve so decided to head for Machete. Decided to take a new ST that @Danimal had pointed out to us. The entry is sketch so we both walked that. Its a fun little trail with some evil switchbacks on some steep sections. @Ocpop came undone on one, fortunately the landing looked to be pretty soft but his hand obviously caught something as he had a pretty good gash and will need some new gloves. We kept heading down Tijeras when lo and behold @Danimal was spied out with his riding buddy. We shot the breeze for t a bit before heading on our way. Machete and ripper were fun as always. We turned and headed for home after that up the Arroyo, climbed out on the loop trail before a roadie back to home.
Ended up with 31.5mi and 3500ft, very happy to be back on the bike, couldn't ride at all during the week cos of work and the fire situation.

The much-rumored possible SART ride didn't happen. Just couldn't get up the motivation. Firstborn was still willing to go somewhere, so spousal-lyftber drove us up to Yucaipa. That got rid of the road climb up to the south hills, so we just rode until we got tired and then turned right to head home. Beautiful skies that provided full-frontal views of the mountains. Beautiful sunset, and a mellow ride home.

Welcome to the "I Suck On Booby Club!" :D

We're up to 4 now, but I remember someone crashing on one of the solstice rides at night... Booby is claiming lots of victims.

I'm guessing this is the spot where most crash. My OTB was near the top... The front wheel sunk in farther than usual and that was it. Handlebar to the inner thigh, leaving a nice scar. Pedaled out alone with one leg. :D

Ummmmm.......I didn't make it 20' onto the trail before it got me......

Well....because of the fires last week, I didn't ride my bike all week.  :(

So I planned to get up early early Saturday morning and put in some miles and climbing to make up for the week. Santiago Canyon was reopened, I headed out to the Tree Farm for Maple/Eagle/Skyline/B* and some extra credit. Rolled at 4:00....and the moon was full. No need for a light at all. Temps were nice. Riding up Silverado Canyon it was kinda smokey. Felt like both tires were flat, and I was pulling a couple buses behind me. The ride to the gate felt really really slow. Turns out it wasn't( :32). Started up Maple Springs and immediately the legs went away....actually they still hadn't shown up. I pushed on. Again, it felt really really really slow. Just felt like crap. Still smokey. Got to the end of the pavement and decided that I just didn't have it in me today....so I turned around. Was chilly going back down Silverado. Back to the tree farm....never touched the dirt. Was back home before sunrise. 17.3 / 2050'

After getting some sleep, I decided I'd head out in the afternoon for another ride.....try to salvage a very low week. Back out to Blackstar. Wanted to get a full moon ride in. 4:40 roll. Hey, my legs showed up this time. Didn't push the pace. Just kinda cruised. Guess most people thought the canyon was closed cause it was kinda quiet out there....save for the 2 groups doing a Halloween ride. I got out ahead of them. Felt much better. Rolled through Beeks' and continued on out to Sierra Peak. The ridge has been graded in some spots, made it quite fast. Got to Sierra Peak just before sunset. Turned around and headed back. The moon finally popped up about the time I got to the radio station. Typical run back down. More riders coming up. Those groups from earlier....were still making their way up. Lots more people at the bottom. 24 / 3300'

Sunday morning, Suz and I headed out early....7:00....over to the Oaks and Weir Canyon.....ladies choice. We just cruised. Temps were nice, but it was humid. Made out way out to Weir Canyon. We dropped down Cliffhanger and continued our loop around. As we approached Cliffhanger again, Suz was starting to fade. She started to make her way back, I dropped down Cliffhanger again. This time a little faster. Was feeling good. Then I made a stupid mistake....the front tire climbed up to the top of the berm, then over the top.....BOOOOOOOOM.......hit the dirt hard. Fortunately I stayed up on the trail and not over the edge down the cliff. Banged up my knee and elbow pretty good. Remounted and continued on my way. Eventually caught back up to Suz. Knee wasn't happy. Hand wasn't happy. Eventually made it back up to Barham Ridge....down Goat, then headed home. Elbow scraped up, knee scraped up and swollen, ring finger purple and swollen. :bang::bang::thumbsdown::thumbsdown::mad::mad: Guess I was more tired than I thought I was. 3 rides in less than 30 hours. 18 / 2400'

Sorry to hear about the roll in the dirt. Hopefully it's all quick to heal.

Today in the AM before I went to J's garage, rode at Bonelli. Nice temps out, several hikers, e bikers and some real mtbkrs too. Checked out a trail I only went up once several yrs ago. This time I went down, nice chunk, really had to pay attention! Drivetrain super noisy, until J got a hold of it later in the day!!

It happened. @DangerDirtyD rode the single speed up and down like a boss! No HAB and only a couple quick rolling breaks on the way up. He's probably at home right now looking at single speed frames on-line. Or maybe he's icing his arms and shoulders. :p

Fun, peaceful night on the mountain.

Yea I’m tired! I didn’t realize how hard I was working thanks to the safety gear. I had to stop once after the first junction and Faustie had that disappointed tone in his voice...no matter, I was about to fall over. I’m super glad I wore my pads tonight! My triceps are sore. Everything else seems good. No exacerbated knee issues. I’m surprised the Maxxis Rekon tires didn’t feel squirrelly at the 20ish PSI they contained. First time on a 800mm bar and oval ring and SS and I probably would do it again. DH was tiring. Got bucked off line a few times. Tried to ride rear brake only and got even bouncier. Respect Faustie for doing the front range JPL loop on a hardtail! I love your saddle! You are a friggin gorilla handed Neanderthal with your thick-ass monkey grips! @Luis, we were there 11/3/17, so 3 years ago in the cold. Thanks for playing guys!

Anytime you need milk for the kids, just jump on the 210 and head over. She'll never suspect a thing if you don't take a bike when you leave the house.

rode fullerton loop!! sunday pm. Not too many people. Was nice.. then yesterday w/ my once in a while day off.. went over to El Moro..
Does rattlesnake seem shorter to you? haven't ridden it in a while... just seem different...then over to emerald falls... and back to car... but instead of home decided to go for a swim at Shaw's cove... woohoo.. the water is already cold.. none of that late summer bath water... was swimming around when a small harbor seal decided to check me out.. swam underneath me and then around... then took off.... I wish I had a px!

Great mtbking and snorkeling in the sea! I love S Cal..

Something about pushing a harder gear than Jzilla to retrieve milk and diapers sounds wacky. I have enough clutter in that part of the garage that she hasn't noticed a missing bike in the past, as long as it's not her bike that's gone.

Funny that trail is the only reason I go to Bonelli!
Ride it baby, you are a rockstar!

As I was setting out on Monday morning I took it as a sign that I was going to have a good day.

Was planning on going up Loch Leven, but found the road to it blocked so kept going on 38, through the burn area up to Angelus Oaks. Didn't stop to take any pics but it wasn't pretty. Parked at the top of Middle Control Road where it was chilly at 51 degrees. Went down MCR to SART and headed up it.
Immediately had to stop and put on the head net the gnats were swarming. Along the way took a little side venture on 1no7, a rugged trail with multiple rock slides but the scenery was superb so it was worth the effort. Continued onward almost to Glass Road, then turned around and went back down. Also finished the rest of MCR and tested a bit of the PO side of 2eo3. The goal was just to have some fun, do a little exploring and shake off the drudge of big city living by seeking out some of the positive energy that circulates in pristine mountainous arteries. Mission accomplished. Encountered 3 other riders. 18.27 miles 2,156 feet
