Sometimes we hike

I'm not much of a hiker, I prefer running. My "running partner" and I did 40 miles for my 40th birthday in the Lake Hodges area (flat). But we do a lot of 2-5 hour runs together with elevation usually being in the mix. The idea of hiking is wonderful, but I just can't get myself interested in doing it. I'd rather ride it, or run it. And running most trails isn't much slower than riding my E29

40mi...that’s a nice chunky run:thumbsup:

Where would the masses from SD congregate this weekend? The wife & I chose Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve East, & the choice was good.

Well, we certainly don't want any Joni Earickson Tada results, although, she....is a remarkable women.
Beautiful waterfall, never tire of the sound of natural water in the back country.
Gosh I haven’t heard that name in many years, she is an amazing woman!
I agree with the sound of water thing, it was a bummer to leave that spot, but there were others heading up the creek toward us :gotnothing:

Went on a couple of nice family hikes/walks near about 45 minutes outside of Truckee today. First we went to Webber Falls and enjoyed some amazing views. It’s a very short walk from the road to the waterfall, but my youngest managed to fall and scrape her knee up pretty good, so we didn’t stick around as long as we would’ve liked to. It’s beautiful there right now! On the way back we stopped at Kyburz Flat off the 89. The area was a seasonal camp
grounds for the local Native Americans (Miwok and Washoe). Some cool petroglyphs and grinding stones where they processed acorns back in the day when there were oak trees there. All of those were cut down by the pioneers as they came through on their way through Henness Pass during the Gold Rush. About 200 yards from the petroglyphs is an old hotel/station called More’s Station (only a few rocks and some metal is all that’s left). I was an archaeology major in college and love taking my daughters to places where I can show and teach them about the Native Americans and more recent California history from the Gold Rush. Really an awesome day!

Noice! Every time I photograph abstract Native American resources (e.g., petroglyphs or pictographs) something bad happens to me or to the Project.

Another family hike. Actually more of a walk at The Sheds above Donner Lake - abandoned train tunnels. Really cool! It’s amazing to think all of it done by hand back in the day. Hats off to the workers! All of the concrete you see is newer installation on top of the work they did through the granite back in the 1860’s. Saw a cop walking in the other direction on our way out. I think they may have a problem with tagging in the tunnels! LOL

If you’ve already seen my strava post, sorry for the duplicate.
Was heading out for a 6mi hike this morning, but at mi 1.5 the dogs and I spotted a mama bear and her cub well off of the trail, down a steep gully. Of course the lunk head dogs went after them, down through the gully and pretty far out through rugged terrain and thick brush. After a while, the cub headed back towards me, I could hear it crying(more like a grunt, whine) and Wyatt, the bigger dog came back too, (that’s the smaller chase seen in the video). No sign yet of Riley, my small cattle dog mix pup..I was sure she was a goner after waiting for nearly 10min! I continued to wait, but was concerned now because the cub was close by hiding in the bushes, I did NOT want to be between mama and cub! Thankfully Riley came running up from the gully, utterly exhausted, with some cuts and scrapes( prob from the bushes) but she was alive!!
Quite the morning hike! The dogs will probably sleep all day, although Riley has been tossing her cookies all morning, probably the exertion of the chase..poor kid.
Welp, never mind about the vid, can’t seem to load it :(

Shadow Lake from the SOT Sunday.

Camped and worked on our fly casting at thousand island lake, and headed south on the JMT. By the time we got to the shores of Shadow Lake on Monday, we had been in a hail/rainstorm for a couple hours. Made the call to pull the plug on the second trail night and camp in town at Mammoth. Adobada burrito at Latin Market was better than trail food.
