A Bomb Squad SART Mission

Tom the Bomb

iMTB Rockstah
A couple weeks in the making. Steverino had been pushing for some SART snow recon, I had been wanting some long overdue SART. Rossage was lurking in the shadows scoping some SART, Jason had scheduled an abbreviated SART with Jerry and his little ripper daughter and his wife their shuttler. Pat said I gotta get me some SART and with that he bravely drove out to Wild Horse which was the big question mark in our proposed mission on Saturday and climbed it for confirmed answers. "Its all clear, lets get us some SART! " And it was a go!
Ross would meet at my place. Pat's wife would shuttle us to the Wild horse trail head and meet Jason and crew. Steverino was to meet us at the bottom of the fire road from Morton's peak on Highway 38. At 9:15 we were all at the start gearing up for the 5+ mile climb to WHTH. The climb, about 1500 elevation and some wonderful views. There were a couple snow sections , one that required a dismount and push but that was it. The descent down WH would be new dirt for 4 of us. No disappointment there. It was gooooooood! Loose loamy wheel skiing at first, then a loose and rocky white knuckler followed bye a fast and flowy mildly rocky ( of which my left pedal found and sent me over the bars into the red bark bushes, OUUUUch!), finish to the road. Yah pedal strikes suck big time. Per Jason , It can't be good when you roll up on someone down the side of the trail with his ass sticking up out of the bushes! I was stuck in there and to make it worse those bushes are stout with very ridged branches. It was a slow extraction cause every time I moved something stuck me! Finally Jason and Jerry got me out but not without quite a few scratches and gouges. No stitches required and all bones and joints still connected. My new Fly racing pads saved my bacon! I figured out that when I am coasting heals down that I am inadvertently dropping my pedal below horizontal. Gotta focus on that a bit. Anyway back to the highway. We jumped on the road down hill racing to South fork. So far so good, the temps were still cool and we swooped and railed the trail to Glass road. There we refueled made an adjustment to Lily's saddle and whipped it to Middle control road. I believe somewhere in there Ross had a dirt sample but I will let him elaborate. The climb up to the Oaks restaurant was a griiiiiiiiiiind! It was warming up a bit and it was not a lot of fun unless you ride a hardtail and have legs and lungs of steel! Ross just left us in his dust! Eventually we all arrive at the Oaks and to our support the local store was open . I think everyone went in for some kind of fuel . We refilled our water supply with the stash we had dropped on the way up and then Steve dropped the bomb on us. He was toast and was thinking of bailing it down the road to the car. Hah! Ross, Pat and I went to work on him and yes with a bit of support he was back on dirt! We climbed up the fire road and out the single track then railed through to the Hunting Grounds and had the "Moves like Jaggar" around the back side till Pat sliced a rear tire. Jerry offered up a tire boot and we were back slicing and dicing the sweetness. A few smiles later we drop out on the fire road and blasted down to the cars.
What a great ride. New trails, old and new friends and dirt to the end. A couple minor crashes, one mechanical and memories of another BOMB SQUAD EPIC!
A big boooya to Lily, Jasons daughter, this chick can ride it!
Pat, Steve, Ross, Jason, Jerry, Lily you guys are the best. Pat and Jason's wives ruuuuuule!
Till the next one.
Baaaaaalllllz baby!

Awesome!
I actually had two crashes, neither of which left me with a scratch or bruise.
First one was on Wildhorse, in the loose stuff lined with Manzanita that @Tom the Bomb sampled.
Second was on the drop to Glass road. Another loose corner and I stuffed it into a prone decaying tree-like landing in a stinky mattress. Been there before...
And since the virus closures I have been riding my road bike 5-6 times a week. Just for an hour or so, easy spin, 17mph avg, 20 or so miles.
Works for me. Felt great the whole ride.
Didn't get a pic but I used this to carry more water on this ride

Worked great. Used Specialized Z cages, side entry, didn't drop a bottle.
Can't say enough about how much I enjoyed Wildhorse. And SART is in the best shape I have ever seen it.
The Bomb Squad put the ordnance on target and returned safely to the virus ridden city.

Wow, wee, GREAT r/r!! That took some time, and the pics, spectacular. Snow capped peaks, water flowing, waterfalls, which felt great on my weary face and head. The terrain, supreme. You all are such great riders, whom I felt privileged to sweep for, you did know I was back there right. Thanks for moral support guys, I owe ya all a meal.
If this report piques your interest, well, get your Fannie's out there, you'll dig it.

With gratitude, Steverino

i think imbt heart bar included wildhorse epic is in order scan... just gotta make sure people know what they are getting into!!!
no floop newbies or ebikes...
I still think wildhorse was one of my favorite rides.. not b/c of the single track but b/c of the scenery, remoteness, and true wilderness feel.
you don't see anyone out there....

You are forever a Chicken Nugget in my heart and belly.

I would like to mention that it is nice to know who Fueledbyex8 is, albeit so brief. We encountered your presence about a mile before you would arrive at Glass Rd. I thought you may have been Styx66, Same Hightower, hence, the reason I yelled out, "are you Steve" while passing, hope your day was great.
I do remember someone yelling out if I was "Steve" a lot of us ride the same looking bike! :whistling: Sorry I just kept pedaling, my name is Albert another proud owner of a white SC/ Hightower:thumbsup: the ride was great just a lil beat from not riding much but did enjoy all the beautiful green singletrack scenery out there.:)"
