I Rode My Bike Today...

Well, so this happened on my ride yesterday. Going a little too fast on a downhill turn and my front tire slipped on some wet rocks and slid out. It’s about the worse time for this to happen on many levels but it is what it is. So no ride report from me for a month or two.

Damn, Looks like a clean break. Heal up quickly. I hope your bike is okay. What trail?

I must have strong bones, because my shoulder pops out of socket instead of breaking.

The Hospital I work at Hoag, the ER has been a Ghost Town over the past 3 weeks. People are afraid to come in for the little things, which is good.

I rode around MV today Water Works, Rage-Spitfire 13/1300K. Trails were mostly secluded at 8:30 start.

Thanks for the good vibes all. The fall was at the bottom of the downhill section right before the Luge flag. That section always made me a bit nervous. Surgery scheduled for Friday.

Indeed. That section is one of the sketchier sections out there imo. It's smoother if you ride it wide open and hung out, but a wreck at that speed is going to take you out. If you ride it at responsible speeds, the rocks and breaking bumps make a powerful combination of throwing your front wheel in random directions. Heal up.

Did a quick ride on my local trails before work today in the Ladera area. 7-ish and no other riders. Decided to climb a trail called Rage that is normally a downhill ride and figured nobody will be bombing down it. Dabbed a couple of times and walked a few feet, but not as bad as I thought it’d be. I’ll clean it at some point. Continued on the singletrack and came across a fresh deuce that was much, much larger than anything I’ve seen out there before. It was yuuuge! Texted my college roommate and his wife who are wildlife biologists and they said either human or big cat, but were almost 100% it was a mtn lion. Got the F outta there pretty quickly as it seriously looked like it was dropped a few minutes before I got there. I saw a lion about 1-2 miles from this spot, so likely it was the same one.

Oh man, that sucks. I like that section almost as much as the Luge itself. I almost fell a couple of weeks ago on the last right hand turn before the flag, wheels slid out right before the berm and I just managed to get my foot out in time to catch it. Did you walk the bike out or call the heli?

Heal up fast bro. You will be back at it in no time.

That’s the exact spot where I biffed it. I was going too fast to react when my wheel slid.

I rode back down on STT. it wasn’t too bad, I was pumped with adrenaline and the big soft tissue inflammation hadn’t started yet.

Oh, dang......someone is getting a plate and screws.
Yup, a few extra grams of titanium will be added to my riding weight. I need to take a few grams off the bike somehow... maybe some carbon wheels are in order...

That makes for quite the evac ride.

welcome to the club, btw...glad to hear you’re getting surgery, I chose not to and wish I had.

When I went to the ER the night of the injury, I turned down the offer of morphine, as I wasn’t really hurting that bad. Then they sent in two large angry nurses to scotch-brite the road rash...oops.

Were they Samoans?

Yay! I can post here! I wanted to try to get out for a ride last Thursday-Sunday, but the weather wouldn't cooperate. All I was able to muster was some hill repeats in my neighborhood. Enough to tell me that my lungs/rib/shoulder/hand could handle a short ride (hard fall on Sunday March 29).

So I joined the Saturday-morning-sized crowd parking on Canyon Vistas for a short ride in Aliso this evening. Nothing fancy. Cheater Cholla (paved neighborhood climb), upper Lynx extra credit, Rock It, Coyote, Mathis, Rock-It again and back.

I was appropriately tentative and cautious. Dirt was good. Weather was incredible. People were dispersed on the trails except one large group of asshat mt. bikers - about 15-20 endurbros huddled en-masse at the top of Mathis. I really should have said something, because if "officials" see this, our trails will get shut down too, just like the beaches, surf breaks and LA County trails. I am mad at myself for not saying anything. They weren't speaking a language that I speak, but they are probably bilingual. About 10 of them took off down Car Wreck while the others continued climbing towards Alta Laguna.

After two runs down Rock It, my ribs/shoulder was feeling it a bit, so it was time to head in.

9 miles 1300' Bikes are fun, even ridden a little cautiously.

Ride two of two: Went out to Oakmont and rode with my buddy from work who has a new bike. A fancy carbon Fezzari which I really hope he somehow alters to say Ferrari. But anyway, Happy New Bike Day for him, so we spun around a bit. The gates to the parking lot are closed but the park is open. And 500+ spots are available up and down the street. So basically a bit of health-theater to look like the city is doing something I guess. TSA must be in charge.

The big fun news is that I kept my Chameleon in the 28X18 speed to mimic a 32X21. One gear inch off, so close enough. I survived over the next eight miles. And my legs, shoulders, and arms are the sorest they have been in a long time! Fun times ahead...

Stopping for a picture on a downhill singletrack???

With the recent changes in my life... more free time... I've been riding as much as possible...
I realize there is no such thing as too much of a good thing b/c the more I ride, the more I wanna ride! the only limitation is my leg muscles...
after multiple days of riding, the muscles are just tired out. Even climbing the stairs, I feel it! But everything else feels awesome...especially my brain!
this is my 5th day of riding and yesterday I said, rest today! But now I'm thinking I might rest by riding!!

I'm so grateful that mtbking is part of my life. For so many reasons.
Take care my mtbking brothers, keep safe, ride lots..

Just no hugs w/ your riding buddies! (at least for now)
