I Rode My Bike Today...

Just a Fire Road jaunt...

I pulled in around 7:30 to find mid 30s in Silverado Canyon. Chilly, but not too bad... @Lost Kiwi pulled in a few minutes later, followed by @Grego and the TrailSlayer. I thought maybe @herzalot and @Ocpop were waiting at the gate, but no luck. :p Simon's bike is pretty cool to see in person.

It was pretty chilly in the lower canyon, but the climbing made it tolerable. And by mile 2.5, I was pulling over to lose the wind breaker. I wouldn't put it back on until we were almost back at the bottom later.

I knew it was going to be interesting when we started seeing small patches of snow before the end of the pavement. By the spring, it was thick. Still rideable, but thick... Shortly thereafter, there were unrideable patches. And then it was a hike through deep snow for the last two miles to Four Corners. There were a few spots with downed branches, and a few more spots that the bushes were weighed down and falling in the road. When we finally made it, @Old&InTheWay was already there.

Unfortunately, it was mostly a hike after we started down from Four Corners... When we hit the rideable parts, it was a riot...

Down... With maybe an unplanned dismount or two. :whistling: Post ride beverages at the vehicles...

That's a proper snow ride! Good job.
Hope you can feel your toes and fingers now!

Awesome effort!! I knew I could count on y'all! Reminds me of the effort required for me to get out of my chair and HAB over to my beer cooler. I could even come back with a snowball!

I'm thinking it won't be melted for a while... but I may be heading up Maple Springs on Sunday AM with my son :)

Mt. High website said roads were closed, but were expected to open soon. CalTrans website said chain control. I decided to head for the hills for a proper snow sport. There's A LOT of snow up there!

I'll report elsewhere, and let you bicycle people keep reporting here.

Not sure what to think of your ride - looks like an adventure. I think I preferred my choice.

Did you get to Motorway? Was there snow on it? Sounds like you (wisely?) didn't make the traverse.

Climbing Maple Springs, we could see Main Divide pretty clearly, and there was snow for at least the first few miles after Four Corners. Deep snow. I wasn't ready to push the bike for that many more miles and probably wouldn't have had the supplies after our 3 hour climb to Four Corners. Thankfully the others agreed!

As it was, we ended up pushing the bikes for most of the first mile coming back down Maple Springs.

That looks epic! I’m sorry and glad I couldn’t bring myself to join you guys. The snow is triggering the PTSD from yesterday.

I was hoping for a Motorway snow ride but it just was not in the cards. Plenty of snow elsewhere but MW looked dry anyway. Oh well, still had a great time with some crazy riders. I enjoy rides that are out of the norm even if there is some hiking involved. Legs will be sore tomorrow.

Hey now

You got this!

Got an early start so I could watch the sunrise. 29 degrees at the end of the pavement with wind gust chill of 24. Was out of direct sun light and below freezing almost all the way up to 4 Cs. It was a lot of work plodding through miles of deep snow but the fantastic vistas, scenery and good company made it worth it. Legs were cramping and the bike was squealing. When I got home and inspected the bike it turned out to be a tiny pebble that wouldn't allow the brake pad to release from the rotor on the back wheel.

I was going to ride, but I thought it would be too wet. This morning I worked a fence line in my work boots. They started collecting mud right away. It was just too wet for me to ride. Tonight I went to my HD store for more supplies and I saw two riders, lights blazing, about to drop Space Mtn. I looked at my temp gage, 52 degrees, so it was bit colder on top probably 49 without windchill. I was thinking if I was to ride; Space was the place. I think it's too slick at the bottom and Rosewood would be soup. I may have to wait a little longer as we received 1 1/2 inches and the ground had already soaked from earlier rains so tomorrow would be the water tank hill or a slippery climb fest @ the bottom of Space.
Happy all weather trails

The weez and I just dropped Geronimo at SoMo. No pics, too busy surviving and worrying about the little mustelid. Stout!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some technical switchbacks with consequences, a few of which we dismounted. I’m calling this black trail harder than 2-black Holbert, though Holbert has longer cruxes.

The toughest trail I’ve ever taken the weez on; she crushed a bunch of necky stuff and rode smart. Really makes a partner proud to see her grow into such a competent rider...and make that sick bike work for her.

Throngs of users out, cool breeze made me wish for more than a T-shirt once or twice.

Thanks again, @Tom the Bomb, for pointing me at Geronimo. I can always depend on your endorsement. The goods!!!!!!!!

Awesome!! You two are so blessed to get to adventure together!

Yes they are...

San Juan up and down to Cocktail Rock with the Professor this afternoon. It felt good to stretch the single speed muscles... :inlove: There were a couple muddy patches near the bottom, but after that it was fine. Some of the spots that were exposed to the sun and wind were bone dry. Lots of shuttlers coming down from Blue Jay with tales of woe. They should read the forum...

Fun day... 5500 feet to go.
