The bomb squad meets its match! Trabuco, Pinos, Bell Ridge

Trabuco-Bell Ridge on 12/22/13

mike001 from STR got this one going, and I'm glad I was part of it.

These 20 miles were tough, but it was good riding all the way. Except when we were hiking-but it was good then too. In a weird "it sucks but it's still fun" sort of way.

The climb up Trabuco was tough, but it's a good workout and definitely one of the most scenic routes the Santa Anas have. After grinding up for about 10 miles (form the bottom of the wash), we rested and refueled. I didn't really know what I was getting into, but I trusted that those who had done it before had faith enough in me or they wouldn't have included me.

I gotta say that it was cool seeing so many people (we had a group of 13 riders) able to ride this challenging trail. There were some skilled and strong riders out there! Definitely inspiring to see people ride down Can't See Bottom, and to watch as others would hammer up the climbs I was walking.

The hike-a-bikes weren't as bad as I thought they would be, but they took their toll nonetheless...I was beginning to hurt and cramp somewhere about half-way down Bell. I often think of myself as a fit rider, but this was a humbling experience and reminded me that I'm just a fella who likes to ride a bike.

Despite this, when I was able to get back on the bike in between hiking up or sliding down, it was a ton of fun.

Here are the pics I got. Hopefully others will add theirs.

This ride was an adventure to be sure - the right mindset and attitude seem to me to be just as important as skill, but I would not try this without full knowledge of how physically demanding it is. I'm glad I went, and I think I learned a few things about riding and about myself while out there. Thanks for including me on this outing Mike!

Re: Trabuco-Bell Ridge on 12/22/13

NICE!!!
Great Pics and ride report! What lake was that in the one pic? Doing those kinda rides (to include Joplin) you have got to be getting some serious legs and lungs on you!

So Pat tells me he is hooking up with Ken, Ridin Rox and a few others to ride Bell Ridge. I have not done Bell or Pinos in about 15 years so I thought it about time I get some of those Santa anas again. After all how tough could it be, we just scratched up Harding to Joplin, it couldn’t be too tough right? NNNNNNNNot! Now I remember why no one has asked me to go back in such a long time. Here Goes.

Pat, Tom, Tj, Ian and I met me for departure at 6:15, 4 on the tule one in the back of the Excursion and down the 15 through the tolls to Trabuco Wash. We new it was supposed to be about 70 deg. so it should be a great day to ride. When we left it was about 41 deg. so we are all watching the temp, shootin the breeze about any thing to do about riding and sure enough we miss our turn off! Notice I say we! So flip a ramp and back on track. We get to the wash and it has warmed up to a toasty 45 deg.! Everyone is bouncing around getting dressed and trying to warm up to no avail, we are in a valley and it is going to be cold till the sun gets up over the hills.
About 4 miles of frozen toes, hands and cheeks we arrive at The Holy Jim trail head and meet up with Ken and his squad. All toll we have 14 accomplished riders including a lone brave female Ridin Rox. I have seen her banter on STR and know she has just finished a marathon so obviously no problem there.
We set off to Trabuco and begin this is beautiful, this is great, this is cool, this is nice, this is ok, this is tricky, this is getting tougher, this is a f@#$ing hard climb up to the saddle of Main divide and Pinos. Wow Sh!t Tj says glad that’s over and I whisper in his ear, No, its, NNNot! He looks at me with a puzzled look and I say you‘ll see.
The rest of the riders arrive we eat some pump me up then saddle up to pedal again. TJ says that way? Pointing down Main Divide and I say Nope! That way. Straight up the side of the hill. Crap No one is even getting on their bike! Ken is hauling a DH bike and loads it on his shoulder and starts the HAB! Up we go, good thing its only about 50 yards! I thought. Then we hit another and another and another and another, ride and hike ride and hike ride and hike! After about 8 of those we hit the top of the ridge touch the high point rock and take a look to the way down. Nice. Theeeeeen I notice it looks like a lot of rolling ridgeline. More up and down on the DOOOOWWWWNs! Shiaaaatttt! Don’t get me wrong, the downs were fun all right, rocky and twisty keep your attention stuff. Then bamb we hit a wall! Ken says 1 of 2! WTF does that mean? There’s 2 of these back to back? Piss these 2 HABs are the worst yet! Ever pushed your bike up a hill that was so steep you had to push it up with one hand on the back of the seat, bike out in front of you? For 50 yards! F#$k! Twice! Double F&^K!
Ok so got that over, there has to be some badass stuff up here after all that. I have heard of Can’t see bottom for quit a few years now and that is what I am looking for. There it is. And yep can’t see the frieken bottom, matter of fact can’t see half the damn trail! Starts off rolling over the edge of some jagged rocks sharp left if you can, steep ass wheel skier to a slight right you cannot see over, drop down even steeper if you can imagine, by now hang on for dear life and hope that front tire does not slide out and send you rolling for f#@$in ever only to role up and over a rocky pin pointed out cropping then straight down for 30 more feet and finally a roll out! Ian says you ridin it, Tom says you ridin it, Pat says your not ridin it are ya?
I walked it! TJ was contemplating it sounding like he was trying to talk himself into it but He walked It! Remember Ken, the guy with the DH bike? Ya no Sh!t guess why he lugged that sucker all the way up here? Yup! Just so he couuuuuuuld ride it! And look good doing it too! Faulker! Vino gave it a shot and almost cleaned it with just a couple dabs and the multi colored Mark, guy from Fullerton bikes gave it the old college try with no luck, then comes Roxy. She rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrro
walked it! Whew there for a minute I thought I was gonna swallow my balls! After the show we get back to real mountain biking. A couple more ups and downs things are starting to put a grin on my face, we hit a couple nice rollers some rock strewn quick drops and then hit an extended loose and rocky rutted down that had me puckering again. One foot out, one foot in, Eyes popping out holding my breath screamer! Damn that was close didn’t know weather to Sh!t or fart! Not sure if I liked that or not! Check my shorts uncramp my fingers from the bars and ride on. After a few more ups and downs (that’s right). Ken points out the last downhill that leads back to the fire road and back to the cars. We drop in to some nice flow with switchbacks steep turns a bit of rocks and yes I dumped it off the high side of a turn, thought I was gonna jam my shoulder but all good, got my nice TL shorts dirty though. Small price to pay.
All in all a great, tough day of riding. 20 miles and I swear 5 of it hike a bike 15 climbing and maaaaaaybe 5 of downhill. Felt like it any way.
Beautiful day, new dirt and friends thanks to all and Roxy you rock girl!
Till the next one.
Tom the Bomb

All is good at the start.

Re: The bomb squad meets its match!

Holy fahhhhshizzle!
You had me on the freakin' edge of my seat! Thanks for the report and the pics.
Sounds like Palm Canyon has nothing on this ride as far as technical...

That DH bike looked to be about 40 lbs...

Re: The bomb squad meets its match! Trabuco, Pinos, Bell Rid

Well-put Tom. That combination of "smile-on-your-face-don't-know-if-you-should-Sh!t-or-fart-not-sure-if-you-liked-it-but-you're-still-smiling" sensation is just a perfect way of describing it.

Hey Mikie, can you or someone else merge our 2 threads?

Re: The bomb squad meets its match!

This ride makes Pce look like a family outing!

I just did. Yikes! Tom the Bomb! STR means a tremendous amount to me, as I'm sure it does to all of you as well... Let's stay respectful (I'm not saying you were not). I really wish the owners would take the time to rebuild it so it was like it was...
(This is just a side note. I don't want to derail this post. This is good stuff!!!)

Yes it was a tad bit cold but once we got peddling and joints start thawing out it was all good.

I saw the RR yesterday night on STR, but I don't see it now.. :?:

Re: The bomb squad meets its match! Trabuco, Pinos, Bell Rid

The other RR might have been "modded" out. Dunno, but it's gone.

It was cold that morning - Our toes didn't warm up for just about the entire climb up to the saddle/Main Divide!

Re: The bomb squad meets its match! Trabuco, Pinos, Bell Rid

Just found today I had a casualty from this ride.
I guess it is an opportunity to heed the multitude of suggestion to switch over to clips. Oh I see a some leg, elbow and hip bruising in my future. :)

Ha guess I should check mine too!
Good to ride with you Ray.

this aint no joke of a ride... bell ridge//los pinos.. I once got lost trying to find trabuco and I think I went down los pinos for about 1/2 mile... I realized this aint trabuco.. and turned around.. that was the scary walking....
I wonder where how the christmas tree is doing...
I've been to the summit of Loose Pinos with Mike, but we went down Bell Ridge and Yeager Mesa. I would need a guide to navigate, especially at night.

This ride report continues to bug me. There is no match for the Bomb Squad and it's righteous commander xiānshēng @Tom the Bomb. How about a rematch? @Faust29 @Luis ? @mike @et al.
Night ride?

When it opens, certainly... Trabuco is entirely in the revised closure, as is Main Divide from Santiago Peak all the way to Bluejay. The top of Pinos is in the closure, as well.

Edit: I went up the bottom of Bell for about a mile past the flag, and it was pretty torn up from the dozers. There were even a couple helicopter pads carved out. It looks really "wide" looking across the canyon from STT.

Well Sh!t! I forgot about the closures. Your reconnaissance sounds discouraging.
