I Rode My Bike Today...

The weezul and I teamed up with @kingaucho for the popular Hole in the Ground trail.

Good call! It's a high quality XC route through the dramatic alpine environs of Donner Pass. The 12-mile trail is consistently rife with technical difficulties up and down – maintaining focus becomes a bit of a crux. Several miles of paved and dirt road riding to complete the loop. I shuttled weeze up a ways; hey, chivalry, baby. Met kingaucho down the road and off we went.

A tough but rewarding outing in a sublime mountain area. Put it on your list if you like rocks

Great meeting and riding with you and Moria! HITG is probably one of the more challenging 15 mile loops I have ever done. Start at over 7000ft in elevation to test the lungs/heart, Tahoe chunk everywhere to keep you engaged and focused the entire ride (there's no coasting or relaxing on this one) and trying to keep @mike within sight! He is a beast of a rider! Hope we ride again when you get back to OC.

Cheseboro was basically empty this morning. We practically owned it on the climb up. Made it up to China and did the loop, clockwise. The fire road has been smoothed out in recent times so it's an easier climb and fast coming back down. We had to limp back to the truck after the mini hell grind up out of Gas Pipe. @Luis' bike became a semi-fixie from that point on.

17+ miles and lots of smiles.

Like @SnakeCharmer mentioned the early start meant just the occasional rider encounter here and there at Chesebro.
No tall tales here

Rode over into Cheeseboro and hit Gas Pipe, Ireland, Bones and Lang Ranch to name a few. I was actually looking for flat miles but my overheating and near bonking towards the end told me otherwise.

The 2.4 Rekons continue to impress. Turns that are off camber, loose and full of marbles are no match for them. They just hook up. And as stated before they roll..........fast. I found myself going into several turns a lot faster than I normally would. So far this is the best overall set of tires I've ran.

Escaped the heat and spent 4 days in Big Bear. Rode both sides of Skyline, Plantation, Trick or Treat, Pine Knot, Cabin 89. Today, we rode Hannas Flats to Grays Peak. Great rides in much cooler weather. The Tour of Big Bear was going on, so it was great to hang out in town and check out the beer garden and Expo.View attachment 42133View attachment 42134
Yeah Silvia! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

The new Sunday ride: Seven Oaks SART! Was 83F today vs. 81F last week, but with no cloud cover, the asphalt road to the start was cookin'! Three mile spin up that, then SART goodness! My shoulder is sore, and I guess my arm is sort of weakened from that. Got the bars ripped out of my left hand, and threw me into a manzanita bush. Luckily that was all! Otherwise uneventful!

I road to work today. I found a haunted spot. The front lamp disentigrated 100 yards from the driveway, last time I rode the brifter cable broke at the same place. Rather spooky. Also it is suprising how far back a part comes off from where you finally stop your bike. It is a three lane traffic Blvd and I had to wave a car off because there were parts in the lane.
Happy haunted streets of L.A

For me, last minute Whiting ride this evening. Warm but not hot, Tailwind in the bottle, new shorts, old rider, regular non-standard route. Down Pothole View to Brake Scrub, Squeaky Holler, Serrano du Cow Patty to Gaspar de Portola' y Rovira Parkway. But not long enough to utter his whole name. Quick right to climb the middle ridge aka Water Tank Road to Dreaded. Eerie views of smoke emanating from Trabuco Canyon and behind the Santa Anas. Bumpy ride down Cacti and up Santiago Ranch, then down and out on Pothole View. Trails could use some love.

Coming Soon to Lizard

OC Park Rangers have asked Laguna Canyon Foundation and our volunteers to help with some monitoring of Lizard Trail.
A beautiful, shady, multi-use trail, Lizard has become extremely popular. As such, it's important for the rangers to better understand the activities on and use of the trail.
Look to next week's newsletter to learn more how you can assist.

More details next week presumably... :cautious:

Wow, it's next week already... For anybody interested -

Lizard, A Favorite Trail
OC Park Rangers have asked Laguna Canyon Foundation and our volunteers to help with some monitoring of Lizard Trail.

A beautiful, shady, multi-use trail, Lizard has become extremely popular. As such, it's important for the rangers to better understand the activities on and use of the trail.

For the months of August and September, we will have "Lizard Ambassador" shifts on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8:00am - 11:00am.

To create interest and visibility, as well as, of course, to provide shade for volunteers, a pop-up has been secured at the top of Lizard. Lizard Ambassadors will count users (we'll provide hand counters) and hand out bike bells and maps. Once your shift is done, you'll email Paula with the number of hikers and the number of bikers you counted.

As with other programs - such as the recent Burn Area Patrol - volunteers may contact OC Parks for a ride to their station or, as most do, simply enjoy a hike/ride to the station.

A complete instruction sheet will be provided for those that sign up on Shiftboard.
