I Rode My Bike Today...

Had to get away from the neighbors loud party (again) last night. The wife and kid were fine as they like to wear headphones listening to their music. But I was going nuts. Didn't want to drive anywhere so a local Floop was my escape. Moseyed around at a snails pace on the SS. Very peaceful and quiet all over. Not a soul around either. Ended up with w 14/1600, good for the Floop. Would have continued but wanted to same some for tomorrows ride.

A friend planned out a small group ride at Chills today (That was actually a type-o, Chino + Hills). One by one some had to cancel, oddly enough with the same excuses. Water leak at the apartment, water leak at the house, water leak in the laundry room, etc. Must have been water leak excuse day. Myself, Vince and Bobby would show. Bobby wanted to show us some new to us dirt and I would return showing him some new to him dirt, and so on... Again, I chose the SS as this would be the first time SS'n at Chills. I climbed better than I expected. Bobby was trying out his new Saint brakes on his newish raw Warden those brakes (and bike) are bad ass. I ended up completely frying my F1's down a steep trail. Vince was just Vince... No other issues, just good riding. 25/3700. Fun times exploring around.

Dropped into Whiting late yesterday afternoon.. down from Concourse Park on dirt road and single track to Portola. Back up my current favorite route through neighborhoods and Water Tank Road to the top of Dreaded. U-turn and down through 4 Corners and Whiting Road, which is fun once in awhile since no brake bumps or washed out turns. Back out of the park via Sleepy to Sage.. generally considered reverse direction, but fun to climb and I don't mind getting out of the way for descenders, which I did at the creek crossing on SH. Stopped and got off the trail again a little farther up when I heard a single rider descending Vulture about a 1/2 mile up--he was whooping and having a good time and it was fun watching and listening to him for the couple minutes it took him to blaze past me. I wasn't in a hurry and the big grin was priceless.

It was yesterday.... CHSP starting at Brush Canyon Park for the first time. Down the tracks and into the park via Lower Aliso and Bane Canyon ST. Up South Ridge to 4 corners. Then Raptor Ridge to Faultline. Upper Aliso to Sidewinder. Up Sidewinder to Upper Bane Ridge. Took that North, crossed Bane Canyon Road and headed for East Fenceline. I missed the first hard left for fenceline. Causing me to miss about half the trail. I was able to get back on the fenceline trail at a trailhead in Pomona Trail fire road. Took Fenceline south the end. And then bane Canyon to lower aliso and back down the tracks to brush Canyon Park.
I haven’t rode The Fenceline trail in over 25 years. I must say it is in much better shape than I remember. I was able to pedal the whole way without issues. The whole trail is in good shape, no over growth. Nothing technical at all, a few short steep climbs. But, all good single track with not a soul insight. I will be back soon, this time I won’t miss the first left to get onto the start of Fenceline. 23 miles and 2300+’. Great day for a bike ride.

Monday ride..oaks all to myself..mostly..just kept riding..superman..hawk..deer..coach whip..yucca..cactus...peralta...mt goat....bumblebee..getting tired... and chutes..
Forgot to switch open suspension down chutes..thought it felt harsh..
Conditions r fantastic...
Go get some!

Maiden voyage... The rigid fork on front takes a little getting used to, but it wasn't as bad coming down as I envisioned. Rigid forks really do smooth out the small chatter. Any kind of drop, however, and you need to have your dental plan in order. :D

The Highball is a completely different animal than the steel beast Salsa. This bike wants to run... Up and down.

I took it really easy... Slower than normal on the flat section at the base of Blackstar. And then an easy pace on the way up... At mile 6 I figured out that I was actually on a PR pace- sub 1:00. Then I got flagged down at the entrance to the single track by two guys from the Corona side. I will never be a Stravasshole and pass up the chance to socialize... So I spent a few minutes pointing out the sites, and then finished the trek to the gate. It helped that a young spandex warrior on a lefty wonder bike passed me while I was chatting. He was the rabbit for the last section... :whistling:

The PR was gone, but I'll take 1:02 on an easyish pace with the chance to shoot the bull with a couple other bikers from the other side of the mountain.

Coming down Blackstar I expected the rigid fork to be a bother. But, the road is in decent shape and the steel absorbed more of the little chatter than I would have expected. I can see the attraction to going rigid, but I think I'll stick to the suspension fork... The Santa Cruz wants to fly. I don't know why, but it is hands down a faster bike.

Picture slot machine....and now that bike is dead. :(

Tried Whiting last night. Had to turn around at Mustard due to mud!

At the end of Borrego a friendly rider warned me, said it was the worst he'd seen. I decided to just do Cattle Pond and check from there. It was drizzly and moist, but I had definitely seen it wetter.

He was right. Three consecutive days of drizzle on top of loose clay topsoil turned the fire roads into a damp sticky mess. My bike went immediately 'fat bike' and the rear triangle just locked up. The loose, wet dirt compacted to potters clay that had to be removed with a hard stick. I dismounted and carried my bike back to borrego; my feet looked like show shoes with all the mud. Ugh.

I was able to scrape enough off to clip in and coast back down Borrego, kicking up mud chunks all the way. Nearly at the entrance I came upon my first rider; a bearded dude led by his two boys. I warned him with "Fair warning, Mustard is like GLUE". He responded with something like, "Ok, well you're going the wrong way bro". Ha, ok.

Took 30 minutes with a brush and hose to get my bike clean from 25 feet on Mustard Road. Bummer!

That Mustard clay's a nightmare! Add it to the list of funky places to ride during wet weather. Eastside's sandier if you can get there, but I've had problems on Concourse and up on Dreaded as well. Whiting Road and Cactus could make for decent laps, with some slippage/goop possible on Sleepy Hollow (but at least it's short and you're descending. Sage Scrub can be slippery, too, if you're coming down from Vulture View.

I wanted to ride up here yesterday, but the drizzle makes for a guaranteed clean-up, and I didn't want to deal.

Skyline Trail is alive and well. The drive up the front side was a little spooky with dense clouds/fog limiting my view of the road ahead of me. Once I rose above the clouds, the sky turned blue.

Met @Andy, @Fueledbyex8, and @Ricekrispyota in the SS parking lot as planned. We climbed Fern and took a breather then up Skyline we went. Unfortunately, @Andy had a mechanical along the way that ended his ride with us so he limped back to the parking lot. The three of us carried on and had a wonderful time. When Skyline ended, we climbed Plantation to 2N10 and went East to Pineknot where we took that to 2N08. Not far along 2N08, we dropped in on Snow Forest Trail (according to Trailforks) which was really fun and a great short cut. We got back onto 2N08 and took that to Towne Trail and then back to SS. Perfect temps and weather up there today.

22.22 miles and plenty of painful high altitude climbing.

Same sort of nightmare mud on the entrance to Weir from Oaks. I will never attempt that again after a rain.

Sounds like a fun ride. I might have joined if it had been scheduled for a weekend.

I usually park at the bottom of Plantation and do one side of Skyline in both directions, and then as much of the other side as I feel like. I need to do an end to end in both directions one of these days.

Today was a great day out on the trail
Skyline trail! that is, temps in the mid to high 60's. partly cloudy couldn't ask for a better day. It was a group of 4 of us who would show up to ride some good old singletrack for miles:thumbsup:

Original plan was to use trail forks and try to figure this trail out, I then mentioned to Andy we shld. post up a trail invite since some of the members would prob. like to join in on the fun. Not to mention prob. show us the way and have more fun as a group.

Next thing I know @SnakeCharmer and @Ricekrispyota two cool dudes by the way, would show up and lead the way to show me and Andy the goods that Skyline has to offer!! All 4 of us met at SS prkng. lot headed out by 8:20am. and it was on!

The views all around, didn't dissapoint.:)

This is our new friend Wilson we met on the trail, guy was having bad luck he broke a chain he said and 2 guys that we're passing him up helped him fix his chain and off he went. Further up ahead on the trail @Ricekrispyota and @SnakeCharmer where taking a break waiting for me to catch up as I caught up, now I'm taking a break myself. 5-10min. Later here comes Wilson w/ a flat tire:stop:
him being a noob he has never changed a flat, So @SnakeCharmer and @Ricekrispyota give him a (101 on how to change a flat) which was pretty cool and in no time Wilson was off riding again:thumbsup:
