Maiden voyage... The rigid fork on front takes a little getting used to, but it wasn't as bad coming down as I envisioned. Rigid forks really do smooth out the small chatter. Any kind of drop, however, and you need to have your dental plan in order.
The Highball is a completely different animal than the steel beast Salsa. This bike wants to run... Up and down.
I took it really easy... Slower than normal on the flat section at the base of Blackstar. And then an easy pace on the way up... At mile 6 I figured out that I was actually on a PR pace- sub 1:00. Then I got flagged down at the entrance to the single track by two guys from the Corona side. I will never be a Stravasshole and pass up the chance to socialize... So I spent a few minutes pointing out the sites, and then finished the trek to the gate. It helped that a young spandex warrior on a lefty wonder bike passed me while I was chatting. He was the rabbit for the last section...
The PR was gone, but I'll take 1:02 on an easyish pace with the chance to shoot the bull with a couple other bikers from the other side of the mountain.
Coming down Blackstar I expected the rigid fork to be a bother. But, the road is in decent shape and the steel absorbed more of the little chatter than I would have expected. I can see the attraction to going rigid, but I think I'll stick to the suspension fork... The Santa Cruz wants to fly. I don't know why, but it is hands down a faster bike.
