Camelbak with a twist!

I read this, and thought it is a great idea, I'd buy one today. Here's my reason why!

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.pinkbike.com/news/camelbak-kudu-12-hydration-pack-with-spine-protection-2015.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.pinkbike.com/news/camelbak-k ... -2015.html</a>

A few years ago I too a spill on the bike. As I'm falling, the Camelbak shifts to one side, I land on my back and heard what I thought was a stick snap.
Uh huh...if only.
Broke 3 ribs on my back, between the spine and shoulder blade. A very painful walk out. thankfully a fellow cyclist i ran into helped push the bike out the last couple miles.
With this new pack, might have been a WTF moment instead. And for those who haven't experienced such pleasures of broken ribs, don't. for those that have, try it it threes!

So, what are your thoughts on this new product? Would you buy it? At $200?

The pack looks like a good idea. Its just a really big pack.

I have a Deuter one...I can't recall the name. Bought it at Interbike. It also has the spine protection. I never used it. Bought it on impulse. Then got home and realized Its just too big of a pack to use on a local ride. Its great if you are going on a "big mountain" ride, where you need to pack lots of gear.

I'll get the name of it when I get home.

It's called the Deuter Attack 20.

I use a comparable pack (Volt 13LR-without protection) for my longer rides because....

1. The wider straps hold the loads more securely and spread it out...keep it from shifting.
2. The lumbar reservoir for the 100 oz of fluids sits low and stays low.
3. It expands and contracts easily to carry gear and stuff for longer rides with temperature changes, etc.

I would purchase this as a replacement to my current pack...I don't think I can get away with having (3) different CamelBacks (my other one is a lightweight 70-oz lumbar reservoir model...perfect for races and other rides). Wife might object...unless I bought it for her and "borrowed" it once in a while.

She's crashed hard enough to crack a rib...I've come close enough to be sore.

It's on my list of what to get next for gear upgrades...whenever it comes to market...

I thought it looked large also, but then checked against my MULE.
The mule has 11L of storage, this Kudu has 9L of storage.
So it's smaller than the pack I currently use, which is OK as seldom does the mule ever get full.

I read in the comments of another pack called the EVOC that has spine protection also. Not sure about those, haven't seen them.

You can always use a Authentic stream line back protector for half the price. One that serves its primary purpose- Considering your history of broken bones.

On the Race track, i paid 500.00bucks for proper cage and back protection. Not worth being cheap, but if you are, you can always buy this compressed foam, shape it your self and buy elastic straps and Velcro it together (according to your opening post of protection and not hydration, pouches and such).

What is the relationship between the pack shifting and your broken ribs? Are you saying the pack shifted out of the way and left your ribs vulnerable or are you saying you landed on the pack and the pack contributed to your injury? Or was it the shifting pack that led to a fall?

I'm not sure a spine protector in a backpack would prevent broken ribs, but no harm in wearing more protection.

Arrgghhhh!
reading that made my head hurt.... 8-)

I figure that IF the pack had protection, and IF the pack hadn't shifted, then i MIGHT not have an injury.

But the last statement is spot on, couldn't hurt. I wear the pack 99% of the time anyway, so by default it MIGHT help IF it's needed. ;)

( and the rib break was right next to the spine....)
