I bought this bike lightly used and rode it twice as shown above, then several more times with a different build aside from brakes, saddle and headset. A super fun bike for all kinds of riding. After an honest effort, I realize I can't trail ride on a hardtail without next-day consequences due to my existing back issues. Same situation as the last HT I owned in the 90s...herniated L7 demanded squish, goodbye HT.

I replaced the front tire with a 2.4 Speci Purgatory, tires set up tubeless. New chain and recent brake pads. Used Shimano SPD pedals included (the flats shown are not). Also included is a $30 geared Alternator dropout for setting the bike up with a derailleur (or chain tensioner, for whatever wacky reason).

If you're wanting to use a rear rack, you can add $15 for my Salsa rack adapter kit and Axiom seat collar (with rack attachment points) with stainless steel cap screws. That's about $30 of stuff new; they were used only to test fit my rack.

I'm in Orange County CA and happy to meet somewhere convenient. Shipping would be at buyers expense from 92688. PayPal including transaction fee.

Thanks for looking...

Thanks, StrandBro, I'm 5'11, 33" inseam, +3.5" ape index. I ran a minimally offset post (as is the one in it now) and a 90mm stem (100mm currently on it), and it felt like I had a roomy cockpit without being stretched. Maybe could have gone even shorter on the stem. It really felt perfect for me for all the out-of-saddle riding as it was. I never dialed in the stem spacers, which might have helped. Cheers...

If it helps, I'm also 5' 11", and the sizing gurus tried to steer me towards the medium.

The large would have fit someone taller than me...

Great bikes... And I've enjoyed watching this one go together.

Ha ha ha. Not a convert @Faust29 . Just another tool. Especially as my friend rehabs. But if I convert @rossage, you get first dibs.

That is how it will start....then before you know it, you will continue to ride it more and more. Before you know it, your FS bikes will sit gathering dust. You will get adventurous and ride it down all the trails you do now. You will clean the techy sections and wonder why you really need FS. :sneaky:

I have since the above before.....you will not be the first, nor the last to be assimilated into the collective.

@saymyname A local buyer said payment was coming to my PO box last week, but I hadn't seen it by end of week.

As of this minute I have to keep the bike. My new bike is late showing up and I have a big ride to do, so I may have to use the El Mar. I should know in the next day or so WFT I'm doing. If I use the El Mar it will be back up for sale at the beginning or October (if said local buyer doesnt want it).

My apology for the convolutions and murkiness. I'll update this thread when I have more info, which will be soon.

Thanks, smn.

I'm definitely using the bike until end of Sept, and am unsure if the local buyer will want it then. My guess is he will. I'll update this thread as I find out anything new.

Thanks again to anybody with interest in the bike for bearing with the gyrations.

Thanks are due to the first guy in line to buy the El Mariachi. He got hung up temporarily and was unable to send the payment. Had he been prompt, I wouldn't be able to head out until, probably, September due to not having a suitable bike set up and shaken down. (A bit late for a normal start on the SB Divide.)

I'm committing to the Czar for my local trail riding and whatever bikepacking duty that crops up. I don't need it for the Divide, but I thought (in June) that I might as well move ahead and get it. Delivery at that time was slated for late July. I just can't burn away these final weeks waiting for a frame, so I'm going with the EM. I already had it set up and have gotten a bunch of rides on it, so I'm confident.

It's whacky to think of buying a bike just to do one ride, but that's essentially what's going on here now. We bought or tandem with the same thought...do a big ride, bike expendable. I guess if the ride is big enough it's worth the trouble. Plus, every time you own a different bike you learn more about your own cycling. Though the EM is on the chopping block, I learned loads from owning it – namely, that singlespeed riding is heli-fun, and that I'm not a hopeless spinner. It also opened up my thinking on different gearing setups beyond SS.

Sorry to go off on the tangent... I'm confident my local guy will want the bike when I get back. If he opts out, I'll update this thread then, hopefully around the end of September.

Jz: Roosville MT to Antelope Wells NM, 2450 miles, trying to hit all the sections we detoured around last time, as close to 30 days as I can reasonably get it, but really just out to sweep the attic and get some fresh air. : ) @littlewave FS SS...sounds blissy if it'll work. We'll see in October.

Congrats....have fun. Sounds like a grand time.

Godspeed my good friend! Don't skimp on the vasalene, or like product, for your saddle contact point!

Thank you for the kind and wise words, my friend. I can ride my leather saddle all day without any padding or Butt'r, etc. Nice for drying laundry : )

If your local guy opts out I would be interested in it for a Bikepacking bike.
Thanks, Dan! Three are presently ahead of you in the queue. I guess it's a classic now, eh?! :)

This bike is for sale again.

The stock parts I'm selling it with are lightly used by the previous owner and ridden on two or three short rides by me. The frame, headset, brake levers/calipers/hoses served me well on the Great Divide for 39 days of riding. A very comfortable, solid and efficient bike. I've run it as both singlespeed in back and geared (both dropouts included).

I would campaign to keep it if it was a perfect fit. Alas... I'm 5'11" with extra long limbs and short torso, and it's slightly too large for me.

I have a frame bag for this bike, a Revelate-made Cogburn-branded bag that worked/works perfectly. Can add for an extra $60 (I paid $130).

Hi all, just registered for this bike :)
I am back to cycling after some vacation (8years) of marriage and small children, now they are almost 5 and i have again some time for riding. Found in the garage my old Gary Fisher Tassajara and it appeared to be hardly outdated now :) So again in the market for some 29 or 29+ MTB bike with focus on expeditions and bikepacking. Read some great reviews on El Mirachi nd torn between El Meriachi and Surly ECR. It seems this El mariachi still available for sale? Mike, i've sent you email, please check if I got it correctly.

Hey, @Da_Ghost!, way to take the re-plunge back into biking

I did not get your email; the user should be ouscre followed by the at gmail part. The El Mar is hanging here in the shop awaiting it's next adventure – I'd be psyched to see it get some action. I'm pretty much out of pocket tomorrow, but otherwise here (Orange County and this web site). Chat with ya soon..

Hi Mike. Is your mail ending gmail or hotmail? as in previous post it was hotmal and now gmail. I've sent to hotmail. Will try in a minute to send to gmail

Garage space and domestic tranquility are the the only things that kept me from snagging this one! I have very fond memories of my el Mariachi... They are great bikes.
